Relaxed to Death ~ Beach Bum Gear

These Relaxed to Death designs were inspired by my move to Utila, Honduras in 2015.  I had been enjoying life and relaxing, almost to death.  There are three different versions.   Each design features a tropical beach with two palm trees and a hammock and the text, Relaxed to Death.  The other two versions have additional text - Professional Beach Bum or Utila Honduras.  The entire collections can be found at the following sites; Relaxed to Death Tropical Beach Gear and Relaxed to Death - Utila Honduras.  Take a look below to find my favorites...

King of the Beach Vintage Shark Gear

Shark King of the Beach Postcard
If you're old enough to remember or have ever thumbed through a vintage comic book, you've most likely seen those classic advertisements for X-Ray glasses, Sea Monkeys, and a wide assortment of useless trinkets from the Johnson Smith Company.  The old comic book ads were great, and the most prominent of these was by far the ones for the Charles Atlas exercise books.

The swim trunk clad Charles Atlas advertisements first appeared in the 1940's and ran for several decades.  They were done in comic book style and typically featured a skinny young man, the infamous "97 lb weakling", sitting on the beach with his girlfriend.    In the first panel he's seen getting sand kicked in his face by some bully.  Adding insult to injury, the girl eventually walks off with the muscle-bound aggressor in the next couple of panels, or some variation of this basic theme.  Stopping the story there, it is clear that the king of the beach has made his presence felt, and it is a really buff dude.  (The skinny guy eventually gets his revenge through the advice offered in the books, but I digress...)

This was one of the most successful print ad campaigns of all time, but despite the Herculean physique, the antagonist in the story is a mere mortal.  We were wondering, who truly reins supreme at the beach?  Is it man or beast?  A giant squid, sperm whale, or maybe one of those mail order Sea Monkeys?  We decided, it's gotta be the Chondrichthyes, a.k.a., the shark.  We don't know if sharks can technically really be called "King of the Beach" or not, but we're really, really glad that they aren't amphibian.

If you're a fan of the shark, can't wait for "Shark Week" each year, then this vintage shark design is for you.  This black and white declaration of the shark's supremacy makes for great shirts, luggage tags, housewares and more.

Victorian Inspired Cape May Gear ~ Vintage Fish & Starfish

The beach town of Cape May, New Jersey is the country’s oldest seaside resort, and was named after a Dutch captain by the name of Cornelius Jacobsen Mey who explored the area in the early 1600's.  It had been rumored that he traveled there for the fine fishing, and to catch a starfish or two.  The truth is he was there to chart the area and to claim it for the Nederlands.

By the 1850's people were traveling to Cape May for vacation, firmly establishing it as the nation's oldest seaside resort.  The discovery of the famous Cape May diamonds was to come many years later.

In 1878 a nearly week long fire destroyed a large portion of the city.  In a twist of fate, the reconstruction of the city during that period ensured that nearly all of the replacement buildings were of the Victorian style.  Many of these structures remain today, and is why the entire city has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

If you're a fan of the Victorian age and it's architecture, then Cape May is the summertime destination for you.  If you've been to Cape May, then you can appreciate the following gear.  We don't know if the rumors about Captain C.J. Mey are true, but the aqua colored fish and three starfish make for great Victorian-inspired Cape May shirts, luggage tags, housewares and more.

Vintage Nantucket ACK Airport Code

Vintage ACK Nantucket MA Beach Tag Postcard
The origins of those black and white oval stickers with the two and three letter abbreviations that you see on vehicles have always been a bit of a mystery to me. I quickly surmised that they are used to declare one's allegiance to a beach.  However, having visited said beaches, I never recall seeing the signs posted anywhere, in any kind of official capacity.  But hey, I was at the beach!  I simply shrugged this off and dismissed it from my thoughts.  However, I recently discovered that they are simply airport codes, and that the Nantucket Memorial Airport for example, has an airport code of 'ACK'.  I'm not sure when the phenomenon of placing these stickers on all those vehicles started, but I consider this mystery solved.

If you're from Nantucket, or simply a fan of that awe inspiring island, then you will be sure to appreciate the following modern accessories paying homage to this vintage signage.
